Discover Our Earth
Discover Our Earth is a web-based learning tool that incorporates advanced technology, research-quality data sets, and supportive materials in order to facilitate effective inquiry-based science education for learners at all levels. It focuses primarily on geology-related topics (specifically Plate Tectonics). Discover Our Earth is comprised of three main components: (1) a series of educational web pages designed as User Guides for both teachers and students, (2) the Quick Use Earth Study Tool (QUEST), an interactive mapping tool designed specifically for educational use, and (3) a collection of software tools designed to perform interactive experiments.
Traditional learning materials are often static and allow for little or no interactivity. “Cookbook” exercises, paper maps, video and computer animations are all passive learning experiences in which students do not have the opportunity to ask their own questions, design their own experiments or collect their own data. Discover Our Earth not only allows for, but also requires students to follow the methods of practicing Earth scientists.
