Scientific Portals

Scientific portals provide an environment that simplifies access to a variety of resources and distributed computational services. In scientific communities portals become highly desired as scientific research moves toward utilizing interdisciplinary research requiring access to non traditional data sets and tools. To address the needs of the geosciences community we are developing portals for the geoscience communities.  Our efforts are focused on providing several key features ranging from user logins, data access mechanisms, personal work spaces to analyses environments. Providing an end-to-end scientific analysis environment is a critical need in the geosciences community. The current technology enables us to built user-friendly environments that require a very simple hardware and software from the user side to be able to access all that GEON offers.  We also address the need to support education and research activities for a field whose computational needs are increasing rapidly and spans a broad range.
The GEON portal (http://portal.geongrid.org/) developed by the lab personnel in collaboration with other researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center is a type example of our activities.  As part of the portal development efforts we develop portal-based advanced computational platforms and visualizations.  An example of such application is SYNSEIS, a portal-based distributed system designed to access seismic waveform data and simulate seismic records using 2D and 3D models.
